REDWOOD CITY — A Redwood City man was arrested Thursday after he attempted to barricade himself inside his parents’ house, causing a standoff with police, according to authorities.

The 26-year-old man was arrested on warrants stemming from multiple alleged incidents throughout the past two months, police said. While details of the incidents were not included in a news release issued Friday, the man was accused of “terrorizing” his elderly parents and their community. According to police, the man “took over” his parents’ home, causing more than $30,000 in damages as well as vandalizing a neighbor’s vehicle.

Police said the man evaded officers on multiple occasions, both on foot and in a vehicle.

The man lit a fire in the backyard of his parents’ home in the area of Waterside Circle and Avocet Drive on Thursday, according to authorities. Police decided to serve search and arrest warrants in light of the situation that night, rather than waiting for Friday morning as originally planned.

Police said the man didn’t comply with negotiators’ requests to give himself up, forcing officers to deploy a 40mm less-lethal launcher and a canine in order to detain him.

The man was arrested on suspicion of felony elder abuse, felony vandalism, felony eluding and resisting arrest.
