A Hercules resident died after he was swept out to sea at Point Reyes National Seashore, the coroner’s office said Wednesday.

A witness saw Richard Norio Sumi, 73, fishing at South Beach before a rogue wave struck him and took him out to sea around 9 am. Saturday, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The National Park Service, the sheriff’s office, and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for Sumi. He was found floating in the water more than 40 minutes after the incident. Paramedics found him in cardiopulmonary arrest and with no signs of life.

The National Park Service and Marin County sheriff’s investigators are still reviewing the case.
