FREMONT — Murder, attempted murder and other charges have been filed against a man in a Sunday shooting that left one man dead and another man wounded at a motel parking lot, according to authorities and court documents.

Besides the murder and attempted murder counts, Lorinzo Haley, 34, of Fremont, was also charged Tuesday with assault with a firearm and shooting at an inhabited dwelling, authorities said.

Police still had not publicly identified the man killed as of 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The shooting happened about 4 p.m. Sunday in a motel parking lot in the 34000 block of Fremont Boulevard.

Authorities said the two men who were shot knew each other and were living at the motel.

The suspect apparently did not know them, investigators said. A masked man approached them and fired multiple times without warning over provocation.

According to court documents, after both men fell to the ground, Haley stood over the man who later died and fired at least two more shots into the man.

At least two people witnessed the shooting, including the dead man’s wife, the documents say.

The two men were taken to a hospital, where one of them died. The other man was in stable condition.

At least one errant shot entered a motel room, nearly hitting the room occupant, the documents say.

Police said officers flooded the area looking for the shooting suspect; Haley was arrested a short distance away.

According to the documents, Haley discarded the mask, a jacket and the empty magazine of the gun used in the shooting while he fled to an adjacent neighborhod. Before he was captured, he ran through multiple backyards, attempted to gain entry to one home via a rear door and was seen trying to hide in a garage of another residence.

After he was captured, the wife of the man who later died identified Haley as the shooter by the clothing he was wearing, the documents say.

During the subsequent investigation, detectives found video surveillance from community cameras that captured Haley running from the scene while holding a firearm, police said.

Police said Haley has a lengthy criminal history, including arrests for robbery, assault on a person inflicting serious bodily injury, criminal threats, resisting an officer by threat or violence, and burglary.

Haley is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail. He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning.

Detectives are still actively investigating the shootings. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective J. Blass at 510-790-6900 or at Jblass@fremont.gov.
