OAKLAND — A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a September 2019 shooting death that police say was the result of a marijuana robbery, court records show.

Jose Antonio Alvarez was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail on Sunday, according to jail records. Three days earlier, Alameda County prosecutors formally charged him with murdering 25-year-old Jaime Valdovinos.

Valdovinos was shot and killed in September 2019 while he and another man resisted being robbed for “a large amount of marijuana,” on the 3000 block of East Ninth Street in Oakland, police said in court records. Investigators said in a court statement that Alvarez was identified as a suspect through “surveillance video and witnesses.”

Within days of the homicide, 21-year-old Omar Rojo was arrested and charged with murdering Valdovinos. Both men face special circumstances enhancements, alleging murder in the course of second degree robbery, making them eligible for a sentence of life without parole.

Both men are alleged to have lured Valdovinos to the area under the guise of buying marijuana off them, then pulled out guns and robbed them. The shooting happened when the victims were attempting to get the marijuana back, according to Oakland police.

Police said that two shooters fired at Valdovinos, but they haven’t disclosed in court records if he was killed by one gun or two.

Both men are being held without bail. Alvarez is scheduled to be arraigned before a judge in Dublin on Wednesday morning.
