SAN JOSE — Dozens of apartments could sprout on a downtown San Jose site near the footprint of Google’s proposed transit village — and potentially replace a restaurant in the process — preliminary city plans show.

The proposed housing development would produce an eight-story apartment building at the corner of San Carlos and Josefa streets, according to the plans on file at San Jose City Hall.

An estimated 90 apartments would be built as a result of the development, the city documents show.

The southern footprint of Google’s proposed mixed-use transit-oriented neighborhood — paused at present while its development timeline is reassessed — is about a block away from the proposed development site.

The housing project would be built on adjacent parcels at 500 W. San Carlos St. and 323 Josefa St.

The residential redevelopment site at present is occupied by the taco restaurant Con Sabor a Mexico and a former used car lot, according to Google Maps.

Ground-floor retail totaling 2,670 square feet would also be part of the housing development, the project plans show.

The development plans on file are a preliminary proposal being floated to gain input and reaction from San Jose politicians, city planners and local residents. As such, the proposal is subject to revision.
